The Play Analysis of The Merchant of Venice The Merchant of Venice is one of Shakespeare Comedy’s published in the First Folio. (McDonald 212) This analysis will review the written work of the play and the production from the Sweet Tea Shakespeare Theater Group. An overview on a few on the main stories within the play: the animosity in the relationship between Antonio the merchant and Shylock the Jewish moneylender, the courtship of Bassanio and Portia, and the secret eloping of Jessica and Lorenzo. Not only will this paper review The Merchant of Venice but it will also compare the written work to the acted play. The live action play of The Merchant of Venice differed from what I expected of the written works in many ways. The director used more females in the live play, the cast calls for three yet there were seven female actresses. One role flipped from male to female, there were three females that played male parts and then the three female in the written work. These changes did not take away from the original work if anything they added a little reality with Bassanio and Antonio/Antonia relationship. The females that played the male parts were authenticate in their roles but the ponytail of one of the actress was distracting and I would have preferred her hair tucked into her ball cap. I did except to find Shylock in more of an outrage state rather than mellow and wallowing in his suffering. As I was reading â€Å"The Lesson† there was nothing that hit me to the core or something that really stood out to the point where I was in disbelief. Something that came close to it was probably the fact that Harper and Thanh left to a an island for the wedding of a friend when their baby from a surrogate could possibly come at any moment. This was a little surprising because it felt like they weren’t too excited about their baby that they are expecting even though they are paying for it, so it was surprising that they left. It is like paying for college, but not going to class. If I was in their shoes, I would not go anywhere, I just wouldn’t be able to do that, I would be too excited and anxious waiting for my son. Then the fact that the†¦show more content†¦When they left for their friends weeding I was expecting the baby be premature and die while the parents were away, I know it might sound cruel for me to say that, but I was expecting some kind of twist, there is always a twist in short stories so I was expecting one. It is terrific that there was none and Harper and Thanh did have their happy ending after all. I believe the theme is a mixture of not being able to do anything to help out your child or more so be in control. Throughout the story Harper and Thanh werent able to do anything for their child. First they weren’t going to have any control if Naomi were to change her mind and say she wanted to keep the baby, Harper and Thanh would be defenseless to do anything about it. Then the part where there is possibly that the baby can be premature, once again Harper and Thanh cant do anything about it. They cant even help Naomi to improve her chances of not going into labor early, they feel and all they can really do is hope that everything goes as best as possible. And if the baby does come prematurely, they cant do anything about the baby’s health and cant do anything if he ends up dying, as a parent to not be able to help out your child is one of the hardest, if not the hardest things to experience, you feel like you fail them in a way.
